Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower is a book about the here and now. Written in the 1990s, the story is set in America in the 2020's when racial strife, climate change, and routine injustice has led to anarchy and the collapse and rejection of structure and order. This book empowers the reader to contemplate the existing power structures within our country; it begs the reader to ponder their individual power and impact. Written from the perspective of a young Black girl, readers are able to see, hear, and FEEL the voice of powerful individual in a society that seeks to keep her powerless.

My reading portfolio breaks down the teaching of the novel's concepts and themes and provides countless activities, supplemental materials, and discussion strategies to utilize throughout the unit. Parable of the Sower is a story of the search for truth and freedom. It is a book near and dear to my heart, and more importantly, a story I will fight to teach in my classroom. Attached below is the ammo I would use in this battle to teach this book.
